The Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLNFR) forms part of larger peat swamp forest complex under the Selangor state’s protection. The importance of this valuable ecosystem and ancestral home to some 2000 Temuan is facing massive development pressures.
Early February 2020, the Selangor state revealed a proposal to degazette nearly 97% of KLNFR for mixed development, prompting local Temuan communities from four villages namely Bukit Cheeding, Busut Baru, Pulau Kempas and x, as well as the coalition of NGOs that has been on the frontlines in maintaining the forest health for years, to campaign for a large scale objection tactics.
On the February 21, KAMY went to visit Shaq Koyok, a Temuan artist and activist at his ancestral land in Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve. Shaq has been vocal on indigenous rights and has spoken passionately about the plight of Malaysia’s indigenous people in KAMY’s climate strikes numerous times. He grew up in one of the villages on the edges of KLNFR, that has now been replaced by residential properties. Listen to his story and plea for solidarity and public support.
