COVID-19 RESPOND Misi bantu oa #MisiBantuOA is a disaster response intervention run by youth groups; Shaq Koyok, Gerimis Project, KUASA, Diri Bumi Ecological Practice and KAMY specifically to coordinate and centralise the efforts for immediate relief to Orang Asli communities in Peninsular Malaysia Our targets are the Orang Asli communities located in the interiors and communities living by the fringes of degraded forests - all now facing a severe economic and health crisis, as well shortage of supplies due to CMO amid COVID19. Communities facing decades of environmental injustice and human rights violations will be disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and other future shocks including climate impacts. The loss of these crucial communities will not only cost us the fight for forest protection for climate mitigation & adaptation. Often understated, ethnobotany and irreplaceable indigenous knowledge aids in our understanding of the forest health and composition among many others— including our relationship with the earth. Based on the principles of #ClimateJustice , KAMY through #MisiBantuOA will refocus on how to increase Orang Asli community resilience. Throughout the 1st phase of #MisiBantuOA , we collected a lot of information and identified gaps in food sufficiency within the indigenous community. We also realized that women, especially young women with the child are disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Covid19 coupled with forest degradation and systematic genocide of the indigenous culture in peninsular Malaysia have eroded the food sovereignty of indigenous communities. Climate Emergency 2022 On the cusp of the new decade, we would like to wish everyone a blessed new year and thank you for your endless support for the climate movement. The new decade sends a signal that we have more or less ten years before the temperature hikes up to more than 1.5 degrees Celcius. This will throw the natural systems out of balance, and as creatures that rely so much on nature – this posed an existential threat for humanity itself. With the way we are consuming things right now, without any regards to the environment, we are denying the rights of future generation to a habitable planet. And, for some community, that future is now. For example, this region is choking from a yearly haze crisis during the heatwaves, where the sky turned red in many areas, millions of people are smoking poison, schools closing for long periods of time etc – the haze is a public health nightmare as well as releasing gigatonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. In the north – Myanmar and the Philippines, extreme weather patterns have caused frequent and stronger cyclones, leaving a trail of death and destruction. Sea levels are rising, and as more natural barriers like the mangroves are disappearing, more coastal cities will be hit hard and submerged in the next few decades. The magnitude of the tropical rainforest loss has not only led to a biodiversity crisis but also the degradation of water catchment that we heavily relied on. As resources wane, people will panic, hate, and blame. And this, will be a normal setting for our future, and perhaps even much worse. Our world is degrading fast into a state where it is not habitable anymore. Everyone will bear the implications -- you, your family, your friends, and your community. For some, the crisis has already hit them, risking food and water securities that have led to social unrest. This is the tipping point, if we fail to act now, our generation will be the first to perish because of climate change. In 2019, we have seen a surge of people from various backgrounds, young and old, stood together amid the climate crisis. Inside this crisis, incredible groups of young people have emerged with an amazing level of passion and creativity, and novel ways to organize and collaborate. The young, despite carrying the heavy burden and consequences of inaction by the corrupt and broken system, have shown resilience, strength, unity, survival and most important of all: HOPE. For the past one-year, young people globally have taken the lead for a social change – asking for a better future, pushing for a JUST climate policy where all voices are heard, and even designing for technological solutions. Gone were the days where only people in science can talk about the climate crisis. The young people today are a new breed of climate and environmental activists, constantly rethinking novel ways to empower the people to bring about the system and social change needed to heal this world. When KAMY started in early March 2019, we aim to bridge the gap existing between environmental and human rights causes in Malaysia to establish that these two causes intersect and are evermore connected in the future. One of the common responses we have gotten is that the issue of the climate crisis is too complex and abstract that these groups simply felt overwhelmed by the magnitude of its impacts. We realized that emulating climate campaigns from the Northern states, especially from developed nations, will fail to work in Malaysia given the different socio-economic and geographic scales, and climate literacy levels. The climate movement also faces a monumental challenge to maintain momentum. As a small and new group, which is run mostly by university students and young professionals, we have to select issues that we can work best with our current capacity. KAMY will focus on two main campaigns in 2020; CLIMATE STRIKES and ADVOCACY. Our work is utilized by a wide cross-sector of the community including the media, frontline communities, schools and universities, environmental and human rights NGOs, health organizations, government bodies, and individuals. - Climate Crisis 101 | Klima Action Malaysia (KAMY)
Climate change is moving faster than us, and we are out of time PEOPLE POWER WHAT IS THE CLIMATE CRISIS? The rapid growth of human population and industry continues to alter natural climate processes at an unprecedented rate. Emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases have reached critical levels, significantly warming the Earth's temperature. The unsustainable economic system, driven by corporate interests, has caused CO2 concentrations to rise dramatically since the industrial revolution. As of 2023, atmospheric CO2 levels have surpassed 420 parts per million (ppm), reaching levels not seen in over 4 million years. IMPACT ON MALAYSIA In Malaysia, climate impacts are intensifying through more frequent heat waves and floods. Urban areas are experiencing dangerous combinations of heat and humidity that threaten public health, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. Marine ecosystems are under severe stress, with coral reefs facing increased bleaching events that threaten both biodiversity and fishing communities' livelihoods. Global temperatures have already risen by approximately 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels, leading to warming seas, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and increasingly extreme weather events. Malaysia is particularly vulnerable to these changes. Land use changes and deforestation continue to amplify local temperature increases. Malaysia has lost significant forest cover, affecting not just biodiversity but also crucial ecosystem services like water regulation and carbon storage. Recent studies show that primary forest loss continues to threaten water security and increase flood risks. Sea level rise poses an increasing threat to coastal communities, with projections showing that many Malaysian coastal areas could face significant flooding by 2050. This creates cascading effects on urban migration, economic stability, and social inequality, particularly affecting marginalised communities, women, and children. Food security faces growing challenges as extreme weather events become more frequent. Recent years have seen crop damages from both floods and droughts, affecting not just agricultural productivity but also food prices and farmer livelihoods. Climate projections suggest these impacts will intensify without immediate action. IMPACT ON WOMEN Gender imbalances hinder the ability and potential of women to be actors in curbing climate crisis. For example, access and control over natural resources (water, land, etc.) , access to education and information , access to financial resources , and equal rights and access to decision-making processes to determine the response of women and men in the context of climate change Reduction of agricultural products due to floods or droughts reduces the financial safety net of families, and indigenous women. Health problems that arise as a result of environmental degradation such as dirty water, or prolonged flooding can cause death and impact on newborns such as malnutrition and so on. Lack of access to quality health systems exacerbate the disproportionate health risks The IPCC [International Panel on Climate Change] found that the climate crisis would exacerbate gender inequality and that it would result in higher workloads for women, the dangers of work inside and outside the home, psychological and emotional stress, and higher mortality than men In the context of the climate crisis, rural communities such as the Orang Asli are known as the "frontline community". They are among the first to be affected by the impact of the climate crisis due to their dependence on forests and natural resources. Loss of critical 'indigenous knowledge' such as the loss of herbal plants for the 'post-natal' recovery adopted by indigenous women. ACT NOW According to the latest IPCC reports, we are likely to reach 1.5°C of warming in the early 2030s without drastic emissions cuts. We're already experiencing severe climate impacts at the current 1.2°C of warming, with every fraction of a degree bringing worse consequences for Malaysia and globally. We need immediate & immediate action! Ecological and wildlife destruction should not be neglected by unethical and corrupt parties. We urge all parties to be aware of the critical issue of climate change in the socio-economic and political movements of the country. Can the future of Malaysia survive if we remain silent? Our younger generation will inherit a legacy of destruction and will point the finger at our failure to act. Malaysia is facing an existential crisis! When the government fails to ensure the protection, security and well-being of its people and the future of the country, it is the right and responsibility of the people to speak out! KAMY urges all parties from various backgrounds, sectors of society and society to participate and take action to urge national politicians to take the issue of climate change as a CRISIS!
