Environmental Democracy in Malaysia

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

What is the status of public participation in terms of decision making in mega projects that adversely affect the environment cumulatively, and eventually jeopardizing the people's resilience in the future? We paid millions of ringgit for damages every year for sectors affected by environmental disasters due to our mismanagement of the natural resources, and these damages will be frequent with the climate crisis looming ahead.

Even if public consultation took place, are they meaningful and equal as far as power balance is concerned? How do information availability and accessibility affects civil society's rights to informed decision making and hold corporations and governments accountable?

These are the pillars of environmental democracy.

Join #KUASABersembang tonight at 9 pm with 4 women from Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam (KUASA), and Klima Action Malaysia - KAMY for a discussion on #EnvironmentalDemocracy in Malaysia.
